7 Off The Beaten Track Villages In Lithuania

When talking about Lithuania, most people know of the Curonian Spit, Trakai, and Vilnius. Of course, those places are incredible and very much worth visiting, but there are also some off-the-beaten-track villages in Lithuania that are authentic and non-touristy and have many great qualities to offer visitors, from wonderful nature and interesting traditions to friendly people! 1. Punžonys

Punžonys is a tiny village in the eastern Lithuania, close to the border with Belarus. From the first look, there is not much to do here, but it hides one of the most breathtaking Lithuanian natural wonders – the Punžonių Exposure, also called the Horseshoe Bend, due to its shape. The scenery is amazing, making this place a perfect spot for a hike and picnic. And the best part about Punžionys Exposure is the fact that there is hardly anyone else around, so it’s likely you will have it all to yourself.

Molėtai

Molėtai is a small town in Eastern Lithuania with a little over 5,000 people. You won’t find any tourists in Molėtai, so it is a great place to experience life in a Lithuanian province and get to know the locals. Also, there are dozens of crystal clear lakes around Molėtai, so it is probably best to visit Molėtai in summer, when the weather is hot and you can spend your days swimming in the magical Lithuanian lakes.

Preila

Preila is a small village, located in the Curonian Spit! It is a perfect place to stay for people who want to visit the Curonian Spit, which is listed in as UNESCO World Heritage Site but also don’t want to spend their time surrounded by tourists and other locals. While most of the people go to Nida, Preila remains a silent village with just as beautiful landscape and beach!

Kėdainiai

Kėdainiai is not your typical touristic destination while in Lithuania, but it could definitely become one in the near future! First of all, Kėdainiai Old Town is considered to be one of the most beautiful in Lithuania, even matching the beauty of Vilnius Old Town. Also, the Nevėžis River flows right through Kėdainiai, adding some charm to this small Lithuanian town!

Šilutė

Šilutė is one of the greenest small towns in Lithuania. You can walk in the center of the town and feel as if you are walking in the most beautiful park, surrounded by trees and singing birds! Šilutė is located close to the Baltic Sea, so it would be a crime not to crash into the waves, especially in the summer. Also, the famous ornithology center is located in Ventės Ragas, so make sure to stop by if you want to learn more about Lithuanian birds!

Rumšiškės

Rumšiškės is probably the most touristic place in this list, but it is definitely worth a visit, especially if you want to find out more about Lithuanian history, old traditions, and typical villages! A huge part of the city is dedicated to Rumsiskes Open-Air Museum, which is one of the largest ethnographic open-air museums in Europe. So, if you want to learn everything about Lithuanian ethnography, there is no better place than Rumšiškės!

Veliuona

Veliuona is a small Lithuanian town with rich history and wonderful surrounding nature! There are a lot of things to see in this off beaten track village from the Old Town to amazing Veliuona Exposure, which opens up an amazing view to Nemunas valley, to historic Veliuna manor house! Also, Veliuona is one of few places in Lithuania where you can still find the monument for Lithuanian Grand Duke Vytautas, who ruled Lithuania in the 14th-15th century and is famous for winning the Battle of Grunwald in 1410!
