With its long, paved paths, rugged single-track routes, peaceful wooded glens and riverfront views, the Trenton region is a cyclist’s dream. There’s a little something for everyone here, and this list highlights the very best places to cycle, whether you’re an amateur or an expert.

Delaware & Raritan Canal State Park

The D&R Canal towpath is a packed dirt path that meanders along the Delaware & Raritan Canal from Frenchtown to New Brunswick. The path was once used for donkeys towing boats along the canal, but today it’s perfectly suited for mountain bikes or hybrids (it might get a little dicey on a road bike). With access points all along the “linear park,” you can hop on and off the towpath at whatever point is most convenient for you.

Baldpate Mountain

Just 20 miles from downtown Trenton, the undisputed gem of the Mercer County Park system is Baldpate Mountain. More than 12 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails offer a 400-foot elevation gain, and the views along the way are forested and beautiful. The park may be small, but the fun you can have here is endless. Trail difficulty ranges from beginner to experienced, and a full trail map can be found here.

Hamilton Veteran’s Park

Located right in the middle of Hamilton, the 333-acre Veteran’s Park is criss-crossed with paved bike paths, perfect for a family outing on two wheels. There are picnic tables and athletic fields dotted along the way, so pack a lunch and enjoy a sunny day of riding and relaxing.

Trenton Bike Polo

At parks, basketball courts, and other locations around the city, you can enjoy another cycle-based activity. The Trenton Bike Polo league offers the chance to play an old-school game with a two-wheeled twist. The informal league is free and open to anyone, and they meet every Saturday morning at Lipinski Park. Check out the league’s Facebook page to learn more.
