There’s no shortage of excellent dessert spots to sample when visiting the city of Anchorage, Alaska – here’s our pick of the best.

1. Sweet Caribou

Bakery, American

“Keep Calm and Macaron” is the catchphrase of this sweet little patisserie. A saying easier said than done when you’re debating on which of the oodles of different French-inspired cookies under the glass you’re going to fill your six or 12-pack container with. We recommend at least one Fruity Pebble and one blood orange macaron.

2. Fire Island Rustic Bakeshop

Bakery, Dessert Shop, American

Both of Fire Islands locations have a distinct neighborhood vibe, making them feel like a secret only you and select others are in on. Early each morning the bakers craft small batches of croissants, crusty breads, muffins, and scones, but the smell of the fresh baked goods permeates the building all day long. Bonus: their coffee is liquid lightning.

3. Wild Scoops

Bakery, Dessert Shop, American

This young ice cream shop has something of a cult following in Anchorage thanks to a wildly inventive menu that changes with the season. Their diverse menu is an ode to Alaska, either in ingredients used or in naming (we’re looking at you Sitka Swirl). Past creamy concoctions have called upon everything from locally harvested spruce tips and rhubarb donated from loyalists backyards to coffee and beer from local roasters and brewers as key ingredients.

4. Sweet Chalet

Bakery, Dessert Shop, American

One night of watching the Northern Lights dance across the night sky gave Chef Ingrid Shim the inspiration she needed to craft her one-of-a-kind chocolates. Each of her riotously colorful bonbons are hand painted to look like the Aurora Borealis in miniature. If you can bring yourself to actually eating her artwork, try the caramelized pear with saffron or raspberry rosewater bonbon.
